Short biography and a description of your interest(s) in music and health:
As CEO of the Music for Healing and Transition Program (MHTP), I manage the oldest and largest of the therapeutic music training and certifying programs accredited by the National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians (NSBTM). MHTP educates and certifies musicians in the art and science of providing live therapeutic music directly to patients in all kinds of healthcare facilities. MHTP was established in 1994, I graduated from the program as a Certified Music Practitioner in 2001, certified on the harp. As a biologist and an educator, what I was most attracted to from my training was the science behind music as a method to support patients in their journeys to wholeness and health.
Collaboration Interests:
Research of the effects of live therapeutic music on patients. Many of MHTP's graduates, called Certified Music Practitioners (CMPs) are already involved in research at the healthcare facilities where they work. Also collaboration on training and certification of musicians who choose not to become music therapists, but who have deep desire and the skills to use their musical talents and compassionate hearts to serve others by providing live therapeutic music. It is critical to assure that therapeutic musicians who are not music therapists to understand the power of music and how to apply the intrinsic healing element of music appropriately to patients in order to not inadvertently cause harm to the patient.
