The mission of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s Music & Wellness program is to provide live musical performances that enhance the healing process and benefit patients, visitors and staff in healthcare settings. The KSO Music & Wellness program began in 2004 and currently partners with two health care systems in Knoxville, Tennessee. The program employs a part-time Board Certified Music Therapist who guides musicians working in the program and KSO musicians have completed training through the Music for Healing and Transition program. The KSO was invited to present "Structured observation of live classical music on waiting room behaviors in a University Medical Center Cancer Institute" in poster session at the 2017 Music Therapy Association's Annual Conference and recently completed data collection for a pilot study, "Music and Wellness for the Pre-Term Infant" in partnership with the University of Tennessee Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
