Short biography and a description of your interest(s) in music and health:
Fifth House Ensemble (5HE) taps the collaborative spirit of chamber music to create engaging performances and interactive educational programs, forging meaningful partnerships with unexpected venues, artists of other disciplines, educational institutions, and audiences of every type. 5HE’s arts-integrated educational programs in schools and social service settings connect music making to core curricular learning goals and personal transformations.

5HE’s educational programs include curriculum-integrated performances and multi-week residencies with customized engagement activities that connect music to language arts, social studies and science through arts integration. In partnership with Loyola’s Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL), 5HE extended its residency work to social service sites serving at-risk and incarcerated youth and adults in 2015. For the past six years, 5HE has been working with CURL to share the ensemble’s dynamic co-creation and design processes, and to develop a new set of tools for evaluating arts learning within non-arts environments.

Through programs serving children, at-risk youth and adults, and young entrepreneurs, 5HE is a national leader in civic practice-based arts integration rooted in original music composition. 5HE infuses Deep Listening into all arts-integrated residencies. Pioneered by Pauline Oliveros, Deep Listening uses listening, sonic meditation, and group improvisation exercises to promote a creative mindset for all participants - whether they self-define as an artist, or not.
Collaboration Interests:
5HE is interested in collaborating with partners across disciplines. In particular, 5HE hopes to partner with health organizations to study and implement Deep Listening practice with in the health care settings, and to learn more about what music and mindfulness can can contribute to the medical field.
